COOP News V. 1 No. 2. Feb 16, 2008
New Members Well, we're less than a week old and already have added a new family to our group. We welcome Andrea L'Tainen and Bob Sher, along with their three sons; Gabriel (8), Simon (6), and Phineas (3), their recently adopted adult beagle Olive, and two senior cats Eartha and Chloe to COOP. They live on West Valley Green Road and just got a coop in the mail. Andrea has been in touch with Laurie about adding her chick order to ours.
Chick Order Laurie will be placing two orders of 25 each (!) and will be updating us all when that happens. We are still anticipating a March 22nd-ish delivery date.
Website I went over to Lisa and Laurie's this morning and took pics of their coop and chickens. I set up a new section called "Coop Pics". Be sure to check it out.
Good News for UD folks I got a really nice email from Harm Scherpbier (included in this email) who lives in Upper Dublin and fought the township for the right to raise chickens. In his email to me, Harm said:
"I've had chickens in my backyard for the past 7 years — in Upper Dublin, had to fight the township and got a variance, but would love to work with your team to help other people get started, and ultimately make townships relax their rules on raising chickens. To me it's like growing your own tomatoes — small backyard farming should be promoted!
I have 7 chickens in the backyard (5 now.... hawks did some damage, time to replenish the flock this spring...). During the week they are in their coop/run, and in the weekend they go all over. Many people who see it mention that they would also like to do this — but many are repelled by the township restrictions.
I'm also the president of Pennypack Farm — a local CSA and organic community farm. It's in Horsham — and we have a lot of chickens!! Ron is one of our fantastic volunteers.
Would love to hear what you're doing and how I can participate in your group."
I've fowarded his email along to Debbie and Dave and another friend who lives in UD and wants to raise mini turkeys in hopes they can get some help with the township.
Keep us up-to-date on how it's going, folks!
Next Meeting March 9 at Nancy & Doug's @ 2pm.
Enjoy the weekend!
